Planning Ahead: The Key To Successful Postcard Printing For Your Company
Postcard printing offers an inexpensive form of communication that serves many purposes. No doubt, this is why the cards continue to thrive in the digital age. These cards are commonly used as invitations, marketing pieces, and greeting cards. When considering postcard printing, planning ahead will help immensely.
A well done layout is key. Thinking through the design will allow the printer to return a product that matches expectations. If the customer is providing the copy, get the design guidelines from the company so that the copy will be in the proper proportions. Avoid common mistakes. For example, the final trim is likely to cut off text and graphics that extend too close to the margin. Most printers will provide guidance for layout, sometimes for a fee. Online services often have templates to help with submitting a design.
Planning should include evaluating if the piece fits postal specification. In the United States, for example, a card larger than 6 x 4 inches will cost more to print and mail. A smaller card is eligible for a lower rate. Of course, the larger card offers more aesthetically and it some cases are preferred for this reason.
Aesthetics are also a consideration when choosing colors, the font, and any pictures to spice up the design. An image that looks fine on the web is likely to have too low a resolution to translate well into print. A light color font may appear clear on a white background on the computer and totally wash out when printed. Also look for a readable font.
If the copy is from a digital image, be sure it is of a high resolution. Images from the web generally print poorly because they are low resolution images. Save all digital files using the CMYK option for better results. CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow, black) provide truer printing colors for your door hangers. RGB, which is often the default in image manipulation software, matches the colors of a computer monitor. There are exceptions, however. Some printers now prefer receiving files in RGB (red, green, blue) with ICC profiles attached.
Choosing offset or digital printing impacts both the look and cost of the product. If high image quality is important, perhaps for an invitation to an art exhibition, an offset press is likely to provide a truer color match and a broader choice of printing surfaces (paper stock, cloth, metal and so forth). However, the setup costs are high. For a short run, particularly if it is a rush job, digital is probably a preferable choice.
While one-sided is generally less costly, using two-sided printing may expand the life of a card. For example, if an invitation to an event may include a related image on one side, with a map and key details on the other. If only a portion of the run includes the invitation/map, then the left over cards are not out-of-date and can be re-purposed. Another option is to use color on one side and black-and-white on the other.
Other details for the printing checklist include choosing a printing surface. Is a matte or glossy stock more suitable? How large a run is needed? Generally it is more cost effective to do a large run than to need to re-print, particularly if offset printing is used.
Despite the popularity of email and other forms of communication, postcard printing remains the option of choice for many. The exciting designs and endless possibilities these small card offers have kept them in style. A well conceived project is a good first step.
Pyschedelic CMYK Lamp Draws Colorful Strokes of Light Using LEDs (Inhabitat)
Denis Parren's conceptual CMYK lamp questions how we percieve colors and light
by casting multicolored strokes on walls. Unveiled at the latest edition of
the Dutch Design Week, the lamp's name comes from the famous Cyan, Magenta,
Yellow and Black (CMYK) color scheme commonly used for printing. The cage-like
hanging light fixture includes a LED [...]
