Mysteries Of Color: What To Choose For Your Glamour Images

There is an ultimate question that vexes all glamour photographers, from beginners to gurus. Contrary to what many photographers think, it is awfully difficult to decide on this matter. This dilemma lies in choosing between color and monochrome photography.

In times of grayscale people couldn't care less for colors - their primary concern was nuances of, composition, light and shadow. beauty photographs were all black and white, still being distinguishable and artistic.

It all changed when film started capturing more than mere light and shadows, but also color. With the help of digital photography anyone with little effort is able to reproduce all the abundance of colors, which seems a strong enough argument to stand by "colorful glamour".

That's why I consider it right to look into the question more thoroughly and reckon the advantages and downsides of both methods. Just as almost any dilemma in Beauty Photography, this one is mostly about the artist's purpose, not some firmly-established rules or canons.

For a start, remember, there is no aspect in which black and white beauty photography can be less difficult than the colorful one, or vice versa. Should you consider either of them a no-brainer, you will suffer a heavy disappointment after some time.

Light is crucial in both color and old school black and white photography. Without the proper lighting the mood will be spoiled and the photograph would be flat. No exceptions. No matter if you prefer to create colorful photos or position yourself as a conservative fan of black and white, you need to mind the lighting at all times.

There are differences, of course, though they are subjective and mainly concern the impression that viewers will make of your glamourous creation. There are several issues you might consider on this matter:

  • Colors are excellent for placing accents you want your viewers to concentrate on. People are attracted to brightly looking pictures; composition is easy to arrange based on the colors of its key elements; different shades create different mood and contribute to the impact a photo can have.
  • Classic black and white photography accentuates shapes and texture, not the differences of tones. Black and white photography enables the viewer to notice the interaction of light and objects within the frame, allowing to see those patterns more clearly. If you aim for a touch of subtlety and exquisiteness while wishing to retain and even enhance the artistic impact, monochrome is a precious technique. Black and white can as well remove tone defects which never do any good to a glamour photo - if you got somewhat strange colors on the photo, gray-scale is a life-saver.
  • Of course, your photo doesn't have to be strictly black and white to make an impression of a well-performed artistic work. Some glamour artists find sepia a very suitable way to traduce their artistic manner to the viewer. There are many other techniques to try out infrared, hi-key, duotone and others. There are many tutorials on the Web, so nothing really limits your creativity.
  • Color can be effectively combined with black and white, though this is considered somewhat cliche, but who cares? If you feel you can produce something fresh and original with the help of cliches, go for it. Viewers usually notice spots of color on monochromatic background at once, though unoriginal, they may look quite unusual, ergo attractive; monochromatic spots on otherwise a colorful photo can serve the same purpose of drawing attention and creating atmosphere.

You should know that many lances have been broken on this very subject, but the choice is entirely yours, despite what fans and haters of color or monochromatic photography say. Choice doesn't even have to be made, as long as you can use those techniques efficiently to produce something of aesthetic and artistic value, you really shouldn't bother. In order to produce a perfect picture, you should stop over-estimating gear, techniques and styles; they are not instrumental, it is only your vision and your skills that really matter.

What non-monochrome(black or white) color matches with the most stuff?

As far as hats and shoes what goes with the most colors?

Well, in my opinion, for hats and shoes you should go with brown, beige or gray if you're not going to do black or white. If you're talking sneakers, I see kids wear really bright colored sneakers of all colors and they don't seem to care if they "match" the rest of their outfit. If I had to pick one color, I'd say Blue.
