Canon MX882 Multi Function Printer Review
The Canon MX882 printed out the latest version of our business applications suite (as timed by QualityLogic's hardware and software at a speed of 2.9 effective pages per minute (ppm), a typical speed for an inkjet MFP in its price range. The Editors' Choice HP Officejet 6500A Plus e-All-in-One ($199 direct, 4 stars) printed out the same tests at 3.3 ppm, while the Kodak ESP 9250 All-in-One Printer ($249 list, 3.5 stars) printed at 2.8 ppm. The Canon MX882 averaged 1 minute 3 seconds to print out a 4-by-6 photo, also a typical time.
Pixma MX882 Review
A built-in, fully integrated 35-sheet Duplex Auto Document Feeder means fast copying scanning and faxing of your originals so you can multi-task while the printer is at work. To increase home office efficiency and productivity, Built-in Auto Duplex Printing prints 2-sided documents without having to manually flip the pages. This can reduce your paper consumption by up to 50%. Additionally, Super G3 High-speed Fax3 and networkable Ethernet ensure efficient communication and thanks to Dual Color Gamut Processing Technology, your copies will maintain the integrity of the original while producing scans at 4800 dpi. Featurewise, the Canon Pixma MX882 offers all you could ask for in a small-office all-in-one--as do many other models in its price range. Choose this Canon MFP if you want flexible paper handling and a little more style. Output overall was very good for the MX882. Text quality was above average for an inkjet. Text was dark and crisp, and small test fonts showed up well, for the most part. The text is fine for general business use, and good enough to use for printing a document like a resume with which you wanted to make a good impression, or even desktop publishing if you're very selective about the fonts you use.
The Canon Pixma MX882 presents an impressive set of features, and superior text and photo quality, all wrapped up in one attractive package at a relatively modest price. It doesn't have quite the speed of the Editors' Choice HP Officejet 6500A, but it's no sluggard, either. The combination of a formidable set of all-in-one features for work and for photo printing plus its print quality, make it the new Editors' Choice as a dual-purpose (home and home office) MFP. In our speed tests the Pixma MX882 landed in the midrange or better. Plain-black text and simple monochrome graphics averaged 7.5 pages per minute on the PC and nearly 8 ppm on the Mac. Snapshot-size color photos exited at 3 ppm when printed on plain paper at default settings, and slowed to 1.9 ppm at better settings on Canon's own photo paper. Scans and copies were relatively quick, as well. You can achieve much greater speeds in draft mode.
The 150-sheet default paper cassette can accommodate paper up to 8.5x11 inches. The guides can be adjusted, both horizontally and vertically, to accommodate multiple paper sizes. The cassette is shallow, as are the guides, and inserting even 100 pages takes some finagling. It’s also possible to completely pull the paper drawer out of the printer, which threw us off when we were first left holding it in our hand, independent of the printer. Although it easily slides back in, we would have appreciated some sort of stop to keep the tray attached to the body.
Both wireless and USB setup are easy and straightforward. Connecting the Canon MX882 All In One Printer to our wireless network was a breeze; just enter the setup menu by hitting the Setup button on the control panel, navigate to the WLAN options, choose the correct network, and enter the wireless password using the alphanumeric keypad on the control panel. Canon’s software and drivers installed without a problem. The software provided a simple, straightforward interface for scanning and printing photos as well.
